Amadeus Active Acoustics Optimizes Room Acoustics in the New Multifunctional Hall of the Congress Centrum Alpbach

In the new Elisabeth-Herz-Kremenak plenary hall at the Congress Centrum Alpbach (CCA), Austria, an Amadeus Active Acoustics system optimizes the room acoustics for a wide range of different events at two different room sizes – in the back of the hall, three separate seminar rooms may be created by dividing walls. In addition, a 3D Audio system may be used for special events and presentations. The system turns the place into a truely multifunctional venue for lectures, galas, and high-quality concerts like symphonic concerts or church music. The hall seats up to 750 visitors. It was opened in the end of August 2016 after a profound extension of the former center. The CCA is known as the venue of the European Forum Alpbach. For three weeks in August and September every year, the Forum turns Alpbach, a little village in Tirol, into an international think pool with several thousand participants.

Amadeus Active Acoustics is a modern regenerative acoustic system for variable room acoustics. In the new plenary hall, signals from the stage and the auditorium are picked up by 20 microphones (DPA), processed and mixed in the Amadeus processor, and then fed to 62 loudspeakers. 18 CFX61 loudspeakers plus four CFX12S subwoofers were installed at the ceiling and 22 CFX41 (all Renkus-Heinz) integrated into the walls of the front areas of the hall. In addition, 18 Atlas Sound FAP63T-W speakers were integrated into the ceiling of the separable seminar rooms in the back of the hall. The speakers are powered by five Bittner 8X100, three Bittner 8X200 and a Bittner 4X600 DUAL. Signal transmission to the Amadeus processor is via four Atlas Sound Dante BlueBridge processors.

The Amadeus system has been set up for six different types of events: Off, Opera, Small Orchestra (optimized for Mozart), Symphonic Orchestra, Church Music, Sacral Music. The parameters are stored as presets that are selected by a simple touch on the customized web interface.

Amadeus Active Acoustics is a new system for variable acoustics, which has been designed by Rohde Acoustics, Salzburg, Austria, in cooperation with musicians, sound engineers and scientists of the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna, and the Graz University of Technology. The Amadeus system is already successfully being used in the Kuppelsaal Hannover, with 3500 seats one of the biggest concert halls in Germany. Rohde Acoustics also designed several related acoustical systems, eg. the mentioned 3D Audio technology.

The Alpbach system was ordered by Alpbach Tourismus GmbH and the CCA. AV Technik Waidhofer, Judenburg, Austria, supplied the Bittner amplifiers to PKE Electronics AG, Vienna, who was in charge of the system technology and installation. Dipl.-Ing. Jamilla Balint, TU Graz, designed the room acoustics. Rohde-BeSB, Salzburg, designed the electroacoustics and programmed and produced the 3D Audio sound scenes. Distributor of the Amadeus system is MediasPro, Eckersdorf, Germany.
